Tell us why you became a teacher

I love helping and empowering others. I did it for 14 years with people with mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar-polar…). I was dance teacher and mentor for 12 years at an HBCU as a collegiate band dancer coach. Then, I became a librarian. I loved being able to teach kids that they can learn something new and most importantly build self confidence through library. I enjoy lessons that will stay will them forever like teamwork, critical thinking, empathy, & self love!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moment happened when I switched from being a 4-5th grade librarian to a K-4th and now a 1st-5th grade librarian. I also went back to school to gain a master’s degree while totally changing everything that I knew. So as the once confident teacher I was, I had to learn from others. I realized at that point that in order to be most effective and to reach every single student, I have to be open to learning, observing, & listening to my students to meet them where they are!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’m not sure how much a playground cost and library furniture, but I would definitely invest a set amount in my school. Our kids need a new playground badly! I’ve been trying to find funding. I’d pay on college loans affording me the opportunity to earn my master’s in library media and technology where I hold a 3.905 and do something nice for myself! I turn 50 this year so this will be an amazing welcome to my 50th birthday. I also write, I would love to use some of it to help me get published.
