Tami Walls

I still love teaching because it stopped being just a job a long time ago and quietly became who I am. I still believe in students.

Tell us why you became a teacher

Honestly, teaching was never on my radar as a youth. Once I began college, I felt it was a calling. I didn’t begin college immediately after high school and was already a mother when I took my first college course. I just felt the pull instantly to pursue education.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was teaching eighth grade literature. The book was The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. I had numerous students who struggled with reading. As I was reading the trial chapters aloud, I noticed several young boys really lock in. The moment the intensity eased a young man looked up at me and said, “I saw the whole thing!” I knew in that moment a reader had been born.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would like to donate part of the money to our school to create a middle school and high school library. We currently do not have one.
