Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I’ve always loved learning, and I wanted to help students discover that same excitement. I also believe school should be a place where students feel valued and supported. It’s important to me to be a positive influence who teaches fairness, celebrates individuality, and helps every student see the strengths they bring to our class community and whole school. I had teachers who helped me learn to love myself and I try to do the same daily for every student.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my favorite teaching moments was helping my 3rd graders learn the states and capitals song. At first many said they would never be able to do it. By breaking the task into smaller pieces and practicing together, every student succeeded. The best part is that they still reference that moment when facing hard tasks. Seeing them believe in themselves is what makes the whole teaching journey so rewarding.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would first pay off the remaining student loans from earning my bachelor’s degree. I’d also love to replace the worn-out desk chairs my teaching assistant and I use in the classroom. The rest would go toward tuition for starting my online master’s in education and saving toward a home. And of course, I’d celebrate with my students with a well-deserved pizza and float party.
