Tell us why you became a teacher

As a student, I felt diminished because I was a slow reader and slow at math. I was told I shouldn't go to college. I also felt invisible and unsupported. Currently, an avid reader, I always have a book with me and am good at mathematics. After graduating from high school, I decided to do things differently, so I attended MAVTI for Fashion. In 2006, I became a teacher, I am committed to turning my often painful experiences into positive, nurturing, and supportive environments for my students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was when Author, Singer, EmoMasters creator & Social-Emotional Coach for students, Selina Joy Jackson, arrived in my classroom. She observed my students, made recommendations, and taught students strategies to release anger,aggressiveness, and disruptiveness. Within hours of using her strategies, the challenging students were able to complete their work and be part of the class. My most memorable teaching experience!

What would you do with the $25,000?

With the $25,000, I would set up two college funds for my grandchildren, with $5,000.00. The remaining money, I would hire Selina Joy Jackson to visit my school and help other teachers learn her strategies, so they can have the most memorable teaching experience as I did! Every teacher in the world ought to know Ms. Jackson's strategies, because schools and classrooms would be better places for learning!
