Susan Harmon

I get to love, fight for, and never give up on my students—holding hope for them until they find it themselves, even on the hard days.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I believe every student deserves someone who believes in them. Through my work in ELA and ALE, I have had the opportunity to support students who may have struggled in traditional settings but still have incredible potential. My goal is to create a space where students feel supported, respected, and capable of success. Seeing students rebuild confidence, meet their goals, and graduate reminds me every day why I chose this profession.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student who had worked incredibly hard who stood alone at graduation because his family did not come. While others celebrated with loved ones, I made sure he was not alone. We took pictures and celebrated his accomplishment. That moment reminded me that relationships are everything. Sometimes the most important thing a teacher can do is simply show up when a student needs someone most. When students know someone truly cares about them and believes in them, it can change their future.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were awarded the $25,000, I would put it toward building my dream retirement home. After more than three decades in education, my career has been centered around investing in young people and helping them build their futures. This opportunity would allow me to begin building the next chapter of my own life—a place where my family and grandchildren can gather, celebrate milestones, and continue the same sense of love, encouragement, and support that has guided my work as a teacher.
