Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because teaching has always been my passion. Growing up in India, I loved helping my younger siblings and classmates understand their lessons. Seeing someone learn something new because of my help gave me great joy. For more than 30 years, I have continued teaching science in both India and the United States. Guiding students, encouraging curiosity, and helping them believe in themselves is what inspires me every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments was when an autistic student I was working with finally learned to write the number 3 correctly. He was so excited that he stood up in class to show everyone his work. The joy on his face filled my eyes with tears. What seemed like a small achievement to others was a huge milestone for him. That moment reminded me that every child learns differently, and every small success deserves to be celebrated.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I receive the $25,000, I would love to create a sensory room at my school for my autistic students. Many of them need a calm and supportive space to regulate their emotions and focus on learning. A sensory room with calming lights, soft seating, tactile materials, and interactive tools would help them feel safe, relaxed, and ready to learn. This space would support their emotional well-being and help them succeed both academically and socially.
