Tell us why you became a teacher

My grandpa was a high school teacher and my mom was an elementary school teacher. From an early age I was in awe that they had such an impact on so many lives and left a legacy of dedication. As I got older I also wanted to do something that helped people. I try to honor them both by teaching each day to the best of my abilities. Teaching is always challenging and always rewarding - a chance to watch young adults grow, learn, and succeed. I have been honored to serve my students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

So many to choose from, that it is hard to narrow it down. For the last 4 years I have been teaching high school math. My main focus has been helping struggling seniors who need to meet their graduation requirements. The pure excitement that I see on their faces once they pass that last test, complete that last assignment, finish the last hurdle - when they realize that their hard work paid off and they will graduate - makes my heart swell. I happily admit that I have shed a few tears of joy!

What would you do with the $25,000?

The majority of the money I would spend on a classroom makeover for my students - tables and chairs, wall-paint and flooring, interactive games and activities, calculators, snacks, water cooler, etc. The remainder of the money I would put into my daughters' college funds.
