Tell us why you became a teacher

My mom was my Girl Scout leader and I watched how she made the children feel empowered in the moment as they learned new things. She was my inspiration to become a teacher. My love for helping others learn new skills and problem solving tasks to support their learning is what drew me to teaching.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

After 27 years of teaching, I don’t think there is one single moment. But I know that when I get an email from a former student asking to come in and observe me because they are becoming a teacher. They may even ask me to come in so they could interview me for their college class. Those are the moments that make me realize that I impacted these children at the age of eight and they remember me and remember how much I was an important part of their life.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I have always thought about what I would do if I won money. I would pay off some of my college loan and then I would put some aside for both my children so they don’t go through the hardship that I am going through still to this day at the age of 50. Then I would take my family on a small vacation because it has been years since we’ve gone away together. I have always worked multiple jobs and we could use some time away together.
