Skylar Billingsley

I love teaching because I get to spark curiosity, build confidence, and help kids see they’re capable of more than they ever imagined.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I grew up watching my mom teach and knew from a young age that I wanted to do the same. I used to play “school” all the time, pretending to have my own classroom. As I got older, I realized it wasn’t just a childhood dream, I truly loved helping kids learn to read and discover that learning can be joyful, empowering, and life-changing.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments was teaching a third grader who couldn’t read. She once stood in front of a bathroom sign that said “Out of Order” and couldn’t understand it. We worked every day, building her confidence and skills. She learned to read. Her and her mom thanked me for changing her life forever. I believed in her when no one else did—and she proved she could.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I received $25,000, I would invest in a reliable car to ensure I can consistently show up for my students without worry. I would also put money toward a future home and classroom resources that spark curiosity and hands-on learning. Financial stability would allow me to focus fully on inspiring young minds and creating meaningful learning experiences every single day.
