I lived in eight foster homes as a child, and school was my place of safety. It’s my honor to create that same space in a high-needs urban setting. I combat the Matthew Effect by building confidence in middle school boys through kinesthetic literacy, public praise, and parent praise partnerships, creating a culture where effort equals excellence.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

During 13 years in education, it’s hard to choose just one moment. But I will never forget when two students were so engaged while reading The Giver that they snuck into my room after hours to read the story's ending. Each day, I read up to the most tense moment and abruptly stopped. I was honestly so tickled that I was adamant they would not be punished. I saw it as a breakthrough for two previously disengaged students. Those boys are now men, but they changed how I view student engagement.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Education requires sacrifice. My love for teaching has meant turning down opportunities that would take me out of the classroom, even after serving as a school administrator. I chose to return to teaching because the classroom is where real impact happens, and I do not regret that choice. This award would relieve financial pressure and allow me to stay fully committed to my students. Even more, I would build a rewards closet that would be the envy of teachers across the nation.
