Tell us why you became a teacher

While I could say I lined up my toys as a child to teach them letters, the real reason I became a teacher was my amazing Grade 11 history teacher. He taught in ways that made learning exciting and meaningful. I realized that teaching gives you the gift of seeing the joy of learning through someone else’s eyes. I wanted to inspire students to discover that learning isn’t just something they have to do, but something they can truly enjoy and value.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

What stands out most is when I know a child is going through a difficult time at home or at school, and I’m able to talk with them quietly and build a trusting relationship. In those moments, I can help them see that someone cares about them and believes in them. Sometimes simply knowing that another adult—beyond their parents—is rooting for them can give a child the confidence to feel better about themselves and their future.

What would you do with the $25,000?

First, I would invest that money a STEM robotics club. I want to purchase 6 Lego Spike kits that would work for the school as well as those for after-school programs would encourage students to embrace those fields and encourage others towards the trades. I would also get dedicated chromebooks (8) to go with these kits so that the club didn't have to rely on the tech that is often out-of-date in the classroom. I would provide STEM materials that weren't tech based as well for the clubs.
