Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I saw just how much love and support I received in my schooling days. I wanted to show my students that love can come from a teacher in the most genuine and caring way. I also wanted to show representation for all the black and brown faces that would be looking at me from the seats of their desks so they know what I do is also possible for them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Working at the Yonkers Montessori Academy these students made me fall back in love with my profession. I taught Global History and also started and founded the MOSAIC dance team and I brought the first Varsity Boys Volleyball program in the city of Yonkers. I made impact in the classroom, school, and on the field of competition. These students were simply grateful for the opportunity to see me in various capacities. All of this speaks to my mantra I love ya, I appreciate ya, and I respect ya.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Now that my wife is retired due to medical reasons the money would go towards paying off some debt and also allowing her to be in a space that gives her more easily accessible space. She was a high school principal and she also has poured many years into changing the lives of so many others. This prize money would be used to say Thank you to her.
