Tell us why you became a teacher

In high school, I joined clubs that allowed me to plan events for our Special Needs students. They were some of the most genuine, happy and honest people I had ever had the pleasure of meeting. There was a teacher in the program who inspired me and others around her to see the beauty in each individual and to hold each student to high standards and treat them the way that all should be treated, despite differences. I model my teaching style very much from her. Thanks Ms. Hodges! :)

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had the opportunity to work with an individual in 3rd grade who was non-verbal with no way to communicate. After receiving training in Picture Exchange Communication System, I taught her how to communicate, although still minimally. Once she began to understand communication through Picture Exchange, she began to verbalize. This was the year that her mom reported hearing her say I love you for the first time. It inspires me to try to teach beyond the classroom to help families as well.

What would you do with the $25,000?

The money would go towards helping reach any of the goals I still have: Start parent support resource group outside of school to give parents a better networking opportunities Increase inclusion efforts in our school community through books and materials Explore option of opening a coffee shop to help employ adults with disabilities Partner with local emergency responders to provide sensory kits for individuals with special needs Take my family on a trip
