I am a special education teacher and enjoy watching students light up when they finally grasp a difficult concept. Warms my heart.

Tell us why you became a teacher

My decision to become a teacher was sparked by my high school agriculture teacher. In her classroom there was always a sense of safety, acceptance, and a push out of your comfort zone. She showed me that an educator‘s greatest impact isn’t just teaching curriculum, but ensuring every student feels seen and valued. I thought I would follow along in the same role but found my place is special education after serving as a para professional in an elementary special education classroom.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience is watching my students grow and do things they once told me they would never be able to do. I am a special education behavior teacher and two years ago I had a second grade student that was able to transition into a general education classroom due to the major improvements to her behavior and skills. I see her walking around campus today and can’t believe the change I was able to help her achieve.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to win the $25,000 I would use some of it to revamp some of my hands on learning materials. Put some aside to take all of my kids on a field trip to the children’s museum and aquarium. Then the rest I would put towards remaining student debt from my masters in special education.
