Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I’ve always believed learning can change the course of a child’s life. When I was little, I played school and dreamed of helping others understand something new. Today, I get to watch students unlock the power of reading. The moment when a word, a sentence, or a whole story suddenly makes sense is truly amazing. Seeing that spark of confidence when they realize they can read is truly unforgettable. Helping children discover their voice through literacy is my purpose!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A new 5th grader arrived at school reading at a late 1st grade level. She had ADHD, dyslexia, and learning felt impossible. We worked intensely one-on-one all yeat. By spring, she was reading at a 5th grade level. It was one of the hardest years of teaching I’ve ever had and one of the most meaningful. She later graduated high school and college and even gave presentations about the impact I had on her life. She once called me her hero. Today she’s a school counselor and honestly… she’s mine.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I received the $25,000, I would create a structured literacy tutoring program for students who struggle to learn to read, especially those with dyslexia. I’ve seen firsthand how learning to read can transform a child’s confidence, opportunities, and future. Too many families cannot afford the specialized support their child needs. This funding would allow me to provide tutoring and materials so more students can experience the moment reading finally clicks.
