Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I believe early experiences shape a child’s entire future. Seeing how foundational skills especially in reading and math impact long-term success inspired me to be part of that change from the very beginning. I wanted to be the teacher who not only teaches content, but also builds confidence, creates safe spaces, and advocates for students who may need a little extra support especially those in special education and underserved communities.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was watching a student who struggled in both reading and math finally have their “I get it!” moment. He came into my class already convinced he wasn’t good at school. He avoided raising his hand, rushed through work, and would shut down when things felt hard. I began breaking skills down into smaller steps, using hands-on strategies, and celebrating every tiny win especially in those foundational math and reading skills that matter so much early on.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were given $25,000, I would invest it directly back into my classroom and school community. As an under-resourced school, we don’t always have access to the same materials and learning tools that other schools and counties may have. I would use the funds to purchase hands-on math manipulatives, updated literacy resources, intervention materials for struggling learners, and sensory supports for my special education students. I would also create a more engaging classroom environment.
