Tell us why you became a teacher

My life goal was to make a difference in the world. I’d tried different things and then I did some substitute teaching. I loved it! It was like all the lights finally came on. It’s the most rewarding experience to watch kids reach their potential.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I have taught in both inner city and rural communities. While teaching in the city I had a really hard class and teaching situation. I was inspired to make sure that these kids whose lives could be episodes on Dateline knew that someone loved and cared about them. I gave them all the support I could muster. They made huge gains academically that year. I’ve kept tabs on some of them. One is becoming a teacher and has credited me with inspiring her to never give up.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly, I would pay off some bills, treat my students with a party and give a large donation to our local food drive for kids who are in need. We have a large number of kids with food scarcity and the larger organization that helped them is no longer able to continue.
