Tell us why you became a teacher

Being Hispanic and living in Hawaii, I saw the opportunity to teach a bit my culture to American kids . They learn not only the language, but also the arts and rich history. We read literature, watch movies, cook, sing and dance as I think that learning is better when is pleasing and fun. Also, the Hispanic history has many similarities with the Hawaiian one. It resonates with the students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

There are too many instances and I could selfishly think of my happy times at school I have with my students during Cinco de Mayo celebration or Day of the Dead, but what I like most is when they come back from vacation to tell me proudly how they communicated in Spanish. That shows me their world is expanding.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I am Colombian and live in Hawaii. I want to create a learning experience for American students living in Hawaii to learn Spanish directly from the source. I want to build a yearly program to bring kids to Colombia, Mexico, or Spain.
