Tell us why you became a teacher

I fell into teaching by accident when other careers were met with dead ends. I quickly learned through sharing my life with students that I could inspire students to better themselves, contribute to their community, teach them to dream and long for a better world. As important is my academic content is, the guidance, support and inspiration I can offer my students is all the more rewarding.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I've experienced a myriad of memorable teaching moments, but the first one that comes to mine of her last week. An 11-year-old boy transferred from a different school to my 5th grade class. After completing what I considered a regular lesson, this student approached me to say "Wow. I really enjoyed that lesson. Thank you. I'm glad to be here in your class." The sincerity and appreciation this child showed the first day still gives me butterflies today. If only every teacher could feel so valued.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would buy globes, jigsaw puzzles, legos, and stem toys for all of the 3rd -5th grade classes in my community. For years, our schools have invested so much money in technology, while the classic classroom staples, every day manipulatives and tools for hands on learning are largely outdated, if not broken.
