Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to be the advocate my 3rd-grade teacher once was for me. Diagnosed with dyslexia at age nine, I faced a fear of school that no child should endure. I am driven to ensure every student feels confident through inclusive strategies like Kagan structures and hands-on learning. By fostering the equity and support I once received, I aim to turn the classroom into a safe, joyful space where all learners feel valued and empowered to reach their full potential.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My favorite experience in my first year has been building a genuine class family where every student feels safe and seen. A highlight of this bond is our virtually adopted "class cow." We get monthly updates to watch her grow, and even had a "Cow Day" where we dressed up to celebrate. I love using these moments to create an engaging, inclusive environment that shows my students how much fun school can be when we all learn and grow together.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I will use the $25,000 to pursue a Master’s in Teacher Leadership with a concentration in Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD). This degree will deepen my expertise in supporting students with dyslexia and other learning differences, ensuring they feel confident rather than fearful. By mastering advanced interventions and leadership strategies, I can advocate for equity across my school and create an inclusive family environment where every student is empowered to succeed.
