Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I saw a need for diversity in the classroom and wanted students to see that their dreams were possible, no matter where they came from. My own life experiences showed me the power of representation and encouragement. I was deeply inspired by teachers who made me feel seen, valued, and capable. They helped me discover a true love for learning, and I wanted to pass that same spark, confidence, and sense of possibility on to others.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments in teaching was working with a nonverbal autistic child who had never attended school. He arrived anxious, crying, and clinging to his mother. Over time, he transformed—showing over 90% growth academically, socially, and verbally. He learned to work with classmates, express his thoughts, and even give hugs. Watching my entire class choose to mentor and support him showed me the true power of community, empathy, and teamwork.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to give my hardworking family a much-needed vacation after years of both my husband and I working two jobs to support our goals. It would be a chance to rest, reconnect, and create lasting memories together. I would also use a portion to pay down our student loans, easing financial stress and helping us move forward with greater stability and peace of mind.
