Teaching lets me love, guide, and believe in every child—especially on the days they need it most.

I became a teacher more than 40 years ago because I believed deeply in the power of kindness, patience, and possibility. Even as a young person, I felt that children deserved someone who truly saw them — someone who believed in them even on the days when they struggled to believe in themselves. Teaching felt like a calling to stand beside children during the earliest and most important years of their lives, helping them discover their voices, their abilities, and their confidence.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceTeaching before technology was one of the most rewarding times in my 30+ years in early childhood education. Learning happened through hands-on play, storytelling, songs, and imagination. Blocks became cities, boxes became rockets, and children discovered the joy of learning together. Those simple moments—watching curiosity grow and confidence bloom—reminded me that connection, creativity, and kindness are the true heart of teaching.
What would you do with the $25,000?If I were honored to win the Best Teacher award and the $25,000 prize, I would reinvest it into my classroom here in Hawaii. I’d purchase hands-on learning materials, books, and creative resources that spark curiosity and imagination in my keiki. I’d also support students and families in need, ensuring every child in our community feels confident, valued, and excited about learning amidst our beautiful islands.
