Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

As a child I discovered that I have a passion for teaching and caring for others and I loved to find ways to do so- whether it was teaching friends how to ride a bike, helping classmates with homework or caring for younger siblings and neighbors. In high school, I started working part time at my local elementary school and immediately fell in love with this career. Creating such wonderful bonds with students and playing a role in their growth is something that I want to continue for many years.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My colleague was able to bring Wally from the Boston Red Sox to our substantially separate special education programs and that was a beautiful experience. My students hosted a concession stand with Wally and practiced greeting and serving snacks and drinks to over 200 of their peers. Watching my students thrive by making connections with others and making great strides towards their social goals was so rewarding. I am truly grateful for that unforgettable experience.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I enjoy creating a comfortable and engaging classroom environment with many toys, books and games for my students as well as providing creative and unique lessons and activities, but often find myself spending personal money on crafts, toys, books, sensory items and games. $25,000 would allow me to fund those items and bring more memorable experiences to my classroom. This money would also allow me to pay for additional graduate level courses to further my education.
