By providing opportunities for inquiry, students discover the wonders of the world around them. I am passionate about creating hands-on experiences for them to experiment and explore. I love the “a-ha” moments for students as they make connections and think critically. I love seeing students grow in self confidence and sense of self. Children are naturally curious. It is joyful work to promote enthusiasm. I love to foster curiosity and creativity in my students.

I collaborated with colleagues and the George Mason University team on a mathematical task. 3rd and 4th graders used mathematics to design and advocate for an inclusive playground. The mathematical task explored real world issues, promoted equity, and connected to students’ cultural and community experiences. The task was published in an article in NCTM Mathematics Teacher Learning & Teaching August 2024 (Volume 117). I was invited to be a co-presenter at the NCTM Conference in Washington, D.C.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won the $25,000 I will use the money to pay it forward. I will use it to bring extracurricular science programs to my school community for STEM, robotics and coding. I will partner with NSTA to bring professional learning to my school. I will collaborate with our local library system to get science materials, books, equipment, and other resources. I will encourage hands-on, project-based learning aligned with science standards and foster early exposure to science practices in my community.
