Learn MoreI have known since I was in middle school that I needed to be a teacher. Once I understood something, I could explain it in many different ways. Giving presentations in class was always my favorite way to demonstrate my learning. I have a background in theater and I use my big personality and eccentricities to keep my eighth grade students engaged. As I continue to add another year to my time as a teacher, I find I love it even more. My students know I am here for them.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceLast year, I had a small crew of about five students who were dealing with trauma that many adults couldn't handle. These students ended up coming to my room almost daily to eat lunch and feel safe. We talked, shared interests, worked on homework, and listened to music and musical theatre. I encouraged them and offered advice. These students came to school to learn, but ended up teaching me how impactful little efforts and kindness can be in one's life.
What would you do with the $25,000?The first thing I would do is buy classroom sets of dictionaries for every English Language Arts class in my school ($3000). Then I would sign up for a five year subscription to National Geographic and The Week Junior magazines so I could finally have some current issues available in my classroom ($1455). Finally, I would put the rest to an end-of-year field trip to Six Flags Great America for the eighth grade class ($15,000-20,000).
