I became a teacher because American history was alive in my childhood. As a descendant of Samuel Mudd, I grew up traveling Michigan with my Grandpa Richard Mudd, learning about the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the law. Surrounded by educators—my mom, aunts, and uncles—I discovered my purpose: to teach history with meaning and inspire civic virtue in the next generation, the kids nicknamed me years ago, Mz America!
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceWith 30+ years in education, it’s impossible to choose just one moment. From Debate Team awards and two students placing in the top ten at our County Civics Bee, to winning the Middle School Law Day Essay Contest two years in a row, and unforgettable field trips across Florida, the greatest reward has always been building lasting bonds with my students and watching them grow into confident, engaged citizens.
What would you do with the $25,000?I’d pay off every dollar of my family’s medical bills and credit card debt first—peace of mind is priceless. Then I’d throw the biggest pizza party ever and invite all my current and former students to celebrate with me. Because being debt-free feels amazing… but sharing joy, laughter, and a room full of students who’ve meant so much over the years? That’s the real win. 🍕
