Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I saw firsthand the impact one educator can have on a community. My mother was a teacher who served some of the poorest communities in Mexico, and I watched how she gave not only instruction, but hope, dignity, and opportunity to her students and their families. She showed me that teaching is more than a profession—it is a commitment to equity and service. I was also blessed with teachers who inspired me, believed in me, and modeled what it means to lead.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences is watching students realize their own growth. In kindergarten, seeing their faces light up when they first read a sentence or solve an addition problem is unforgettable. In 7th and 8th grade, it’s just as powerful to watch students beam with pride after improving their scores or successfully presenting a project. Those moments—when students recognize their own progress—are why I teach.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If awarded $25,000, I would invest most of it directly into my students by purchasing flexible seating to create a more engaging learning environment, binders and organizational tools to support academic success, and materials for our Project-Based Learning showcases. These resources would enhance student ownership and creativity. If funds remained, I would use a portion toward a down payment on a car.
