I am teaching because as a Latino, I didn't see many people that looked like me growing up. I want to be the representation needed for kids.

I had teachers in my youth that really helped shape the educator I am today. They were personal, caring, loving, and just made me feel like I could achieve anything. I wanted to be that person for the next generation. I wanted to show students that no matter what challenges they may face, they can reach and grab hold of their life goals.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceA moment I will never forget is when I had an 8th grade student come up to me and cry in my arms after losing a playoff game. I gave him a hug and told him he was going to be okay and that I was so proud of him. He thanked me for being there and told me he was happy to see me before the game started. This meant so much because I had this student in 6th grade and he absolutely hated me. It showed me that it takes time with kids and when they finally trust you, those bonds are what make it great!
What would you do with the $25,000?I would try and pay off some of my student loans and help pay for my current masters program. I tell students all the time that I know what it's like to be a student because I am one. I still have assignments, I still have readings, and so I can understand the struggles some of them are going through. I would also donate a small portion to help fund my STEM Shop. I am currently having to charge students to take STEM, and in a Title 1 school, it just doesn't make sense to me.
