Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher due to the financial hardships of my youth. Thirty years ago, poverty meant I could only pursue higher education if I chose a teaching program, as my aunt was the only one able to support that specific path. What began as a necessity, however, evolved into a lifelong commitment to excellence. From earning my Doctorate at Leyte Normal University to leading the Philippine Science High School, my mission has always been to make learning practical and relevant.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

While I have many cherished moments from my decades in education, one of my most profound experiences was witnessing the resilience of my students and colleagues during the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013. At the time, I was serving as the Director of the Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus. The storm devastated our region, but seeing our scholars—some of whom had lost their homes—return to their studies with such determination was a powerful reminder.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest opening a school offering inclusive education for diverse learners.
