Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because it matches who I am. I believe in teaching kindness, empathy and character. I love to see potential in my friends even when they don't see it. I thrive on making my classroom a place where every child wants to come. A place where patience, compassion and grace are shown to everyone everyday. I care about my friends that see me. I try to get to know them on a personal level as well. I encourage and protect them. I stride to be that safe, steady adult for my students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The most memorable experience was the day I realized my classroom was not a classroom, but a family. Summer just started and the police called me in the middle of the night. They had one of my students at the station. They couldn't find a family member and all they asked for was me. I spent the night in a police station, holding my student on my lap waiting for someone to come get them. I was more than his teacher, I was his safe place.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would buy myself new differential seating and fun rugs for my friends to sit on. Along with a complete new environment to put up for us to enjoy. I love for my room to be bright, fun and inviting. I want my friends to feel welcome. I would love to pay for a field trip for my friends to go on that we would normally not get to do. I would probably buy some fun things for my grandkids as well. Being a teacher is my passion and being a Nana is gift from God! I love doing both!
