Tell us why you became a teacher

I came from a family with no money. There were time our utilities were turned off due inability to pay the bills. My parents worked hard and always emphasized education. I saw it as my way to a financially stable life. I knew I wouldn't be rich, but I could consistently pay my bills. More importantly, I could help and inspire countless kids. I was the first to graduate from college in my family. I returned to the school I attended when I was growing up and that is where I teach today.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was two years ago when I taught a fifth grade student to read. This student was in fifth grade at the time. She is a minority students and was facing many economic and social barriers that affected her education. She had excessive absences because she was embarrassed that she could not read. She did not believe she would ever learn to read. She was so proud of herself and it changed so much once I taught her to read.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use it for equipment and supplies for my classroom that would benefit students for years to come. In an economically disadvantaged student population, it would be so useful to be able to provide students with up-to-date learning materials. They deserve to feel like they are worthy of nice things, like richer neighboring schools.
