I was always a natural teacher, having my house open to the kids in the neighborhood and teaching my children and their friends how to bake, cook, play video games or finishing projects for school. Making it a profession felt like a natural progression.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceWhen I was still in college I worked at an alternative placement school. My principal allowed three students who needed a math credit to graduate to “do” college math class assignments with me. We went through the lessons learning together and when we made an A in the class together we celebrated! They were so proud of themselves and to this day when I see them in the community they all 3 remember that accomplishment.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would dedicate a portion of funds to my well-being. Teaching is demanding, and maintaining balance through wellness, stress management, and time to recharge helps me show up as my best self for my students. I would invest some funds into resources that improve my efficiency and organization—like tools, planning systems, or a dedicated workspace—so I can spend more time focusing on meaningful instruction. Lastly, I would start a support group for new educators as they need it.
