Rachelle Mayo

I love when students get curious about the things around them and then excited when they learn the answer to a question they had.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I always played school as a little kid, I would be the teacher and my dolls or anyone that would play with me were the students. I knew from an early age this was exactly what I wanted to do. As I grew up it became clear that younger kids enjoyed learning from me. In high school I became a student assistant for the 1st grade teacher. She agreed to give me opportunities to work with struggling students. I found ways to help them succeed. I knew then that teaching was exactly what I was to be.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I have enjoyed teaching from the very beginning. I started as a 5th grade teacher in a very rural school. As the population decreased, I was the last hired so the first to be let go. Which lead me to an even smaller setting. I became the teacher of a one teacher school. As I learned to teach kindergarten to read, I also built a family within the almost one room school. I was able we to watch kids grow from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Later God called me to a Catholic school to be a Science teac.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Working at a small Catholic school I would love to share this money with the school to be able to supply my Science room with Stem supplies. As a Grandma I would also like to buy Science kits/supplies for my Summers with my Grandchildren. Finally, my husband has stage 4 Cancer and I would love to share some quality time with him while he still feels good enough to do things.
