Rachel Smith

I love learning. I want young people to also love learning, be curious, and ask questions. A good teacher is the first step.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I've always felt like I belonged in a school. I simply just feel at home in the academia setting, whether it is being the student or the teacher. It is where I am comfortable and confident.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student that was very difficult in the start of the year. She specifically said that she wanted a 0.0 GPA and she was actively trying to fail. She caused a lot of behavior issues as well and I'd had to write her up a couple of time. She eventually came around. She didn't need a teacher at the time. She needed a friend. I was able to connect with her and be a trusted person in her life. She not only improved in both of my classes, but also in her others. She is now one of my best kids.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would sanction off about $15,000 to get my masters in education. I am interested in the STEM concentration of Curriculum and Instruction at LSU. I would put the rest towards the student loan dept I have from my bachelor's degree. I really want to go back to school, but my existing debt is the main thing stopping me. I don't want to take out more loans, nor can I afford to go with my existing monthly payments. This money would greatly impact my future by allowing me to pursue more education.
