Tell us why you became a teacher

I wanted to not only teach, but to build skills and confidence, in every child that I have the privilege of teaching. Being a part of overcoming a challenge, witnessing a student finally gain understanding, and/or encouraging children to love one another and themselves is an amazing daily experience. It is quite gratifying to be developing academics, nurturing social skills, building meaningful relationships, increasing mental health awareness, and promoting physical strength with little minds.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was teaching kindergarten and every day I would do a shared writing activity on the carpet with the kiddos called Kindergarten News. I would choose students to share some news and I would write it on large chart paper. We would reread the sentences, find and circle letters, words, punctuation, etc. I called on a little girl to share and she said, "I think my mommy has been in the war." I said, what makes you think that? She replied, "well I saw the bullet holes in her behind"!

What would you do with the $25,000?

First, I would purchase some preferential seating for the classroom to help my ADHD, sensory, and Autistic children become more successful in the classroom. Items such as, bean bags, wiggle seats, standing tables, etc. allow students to meet their needs while learning. Second, I own a 2014 Ford Escape, and I would love to purchase a newer vehicle. My car is beginning to need repairs, and a more reliable vehicle would be a blessing. I would need to save some money for my trip to Hawaii.
