Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I believe education is power — and I have seen what happens when children realize they have it. Growing up in a family where education was not always guaranteed, I understood early on that school could open doors that previous generations were never given the chance to walk through. I teach because I want my students — especially those who look like me, speak more than one language, or come from historically underserved communities — to know that their voices matter.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable experiences was supporting Mikhail, a shy English Language Learner who rarely spoke in class. Through daily encouragement, structured partner talk, and scaffolded discussions, he grew from whispering single words to confidently answering questions. Hearing his speech teacher and parents celebrate his progress affirmed why I teach.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly pay some of my student loans off and invest in technology for my classroom. My first year as a teacher has taught me that resources are limited especially in underserved communities. So I want to be able to equip all my learners with what they need in order to learn early on the skills they will continue to need to be successful in school. As well as hold a small money fund to be able to go on more school trips so my students can see more of what our beautiful city offers.
