Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children who may have not been given a fair "shot" before. I love watching the "light bulb" go off when they understand something they struggled with before, watching them feel a little better on sad days when I tell them a silly joke, or watching them laugh so hard at all the fun we have because they just simply love coming to school.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I have a memorable teaching experience every year, but my favorite is when the student who struggles the most at the beginning of the year becomes the leader because they now have the confidence needed to do their very best and tackle challenges in the years to come. I love to start with making a connection and building a relationship with my students before I ever try to test them. They need to know someone believes in them to have the confidence to believe in themselves.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would provide my classroom and the other second grade classrooms with new desks and chairs, along with all the supplies my students need to be successful in the years to come!
