Learn MoreGrowing up, I was an assistant coach for recreational gymnastics classes and discovered a deep love for teaching. That ignited a long career coaching athletes at various levels. Seeing them make progress, and the highs and the lows that come with it, was deeply fulfilling. All of that experience was instrumental in my choosing an internship with Americorps in my sophomore year of college. I felt that I finally found the purpose I had been searching for. I was meant to teach.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceWhen teaching a unit about arctic animals, I found a way to mimic the blubber they use to stay warm. The students had so much fun creating their artificial blubber, then actually experiencing the benefits it provides the animals by placing their hands in ice water. They discussed the differences, and it led them into many conversations about animal and even human adaptations. The students' curiosity and excitement turning into understanding and connection is what makes it all worth it.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would invest in science initiatives at my school, such as a botanical project. My students take pride in caring for our classroom plants. I would love to expand on this year-long project by starting a community garden or funding a greenhouse. My school shows me so much support, both the staff and my students have become a second family. It's only right that I give back to the people who have given me such a purposeful start.
