I became a teacher because as a child, creating allowed me to shape my own reality and navigate who I was. I teach to give students that same space. In my classroom they build confidence, resilience, and voice. I also center diverse artists, especially women, so students see themselves reflected in art, something I didn’t have growing up. I want every student to know their perspective matters.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moment was watching a nonverbal student share their artwork with confidence for the first time. Through creating, they found a voice they didn’t know they had. The class responded with respect, and celebrated their work. She would make small gifts as a way to connect and created art for our yearbook cover. I saw how art can transform not just skills, but self-worth and it affirmed exactly why I teach.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would build a fully functioning ceramic studio for my title 1 elementary school. Funds would support setting up a kiln, clay, glazes, and proper ventilation and storage. This space would give students hands-on experience with ceramics, from concept to firing, while fostering creativity, problem-solving, and pride in making. It would expand access to a medium many students would not otherwise experience.
