I became a teacher because school was the first place I saw how one adult could change the trajectory of a child’s life. Growing up with a brother with autism, I witnessed firsthand how the right teacher could create belonging, dignity, and opportunity and how the wrong support could do the opposite. I chose this profession because I wanted to be the adult who sees every child, especially the ones who feel misunderstood, overlooked, or “too much.”

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moment came when a parent told me I had completely changed their child’s relationship with school. This student had struggled with confidence and motivation. School felt overwhelming. But through consistency, high expectations, and genuine care, something shifted. At the end of the year, the parent shared that their child now felt capable, supported, and proud of their progress. They described this year as a “drastic difference.”

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were awarded $25,000, I would invest it directly back into my students. I teach children with diverse academic and emotional needs, and access to the right resources can completely change their experience in school. I would use the funds to provide essential supplies for students ensuring no child feels unprepared. I would also expand flexible seating options to create a classroom environment that supports movement, focus, and comfort. Giving students ownership over their learning.
