Tell us why you became a teacher

I love teaching because it’s more than a job to me—it’s who I am. Teaching runs in my family. My mother and grandmother were both teachers, so I grew up seeing the impact educators can have on students’ lives. Working in the same district as my mom, I became a 6th grade science teacher. Teaching science allows me to turn lessons into experiences. Science teaches students how to think, question, and understand the world around them. I love helping them realize that science is everywhere.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments teaching this year wasn't even during science class. In November we discussed the word gratitude. I had students write letters to the person they're most grateful for. Then we called them in class to read the letters. Telling someone we're grateful for them is something that we should practice more often. It was such an impactful lesson and truly meant the world to me as their teacher, as well as the students and their families.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to win $25,000 it would truly change my life and the lives of the students I teach. I would give back to my school and the community around me. My school has a food pantry that gives back to student's with basic necessities, such as shampoo and deodorant, to extra backpacks, binders, and school supplies. I have seen first hand what a difference this makes in our students lives and I would love to be able to set money aside so that the program can continue each year.
