Tell us why you became a teacher

As a child, I remember having such a positive experience throughout my schooling. Until this day, I can name all of my elementary school teachers because they each had such an impact on my school life, which translated into who I became as a student through my teen years and as an adult. I remember how they created a nurturing, positive, and exciting learning environment. My hope was to replicate that for the children that come through my classroom door.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The truth is, I have so many. There were so many times in my 12 years of teaching where I stopped to say to myself, "this right here is why I teach." But, if I have to choose one, I would say it would be when my fifth grade student, who I also taught in third grade, was chosen as salutatorian and included me in her speech. Listening to the powerful words of my fifth grader and how I impacted her life brought tears to my eyes. It was a moment I will cherish forever.

What would you do with the $25,000?

A portion of my money will go to helping pay for my student loans. I've been struggling as a single mom of two to keep up with those payments so this will help a great deal. But, I would also like to take my own children on vacation. These past 10 years have been a struggle for us all and I'd like for them to finally have a moment of peace.
