Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a SPED teacher because I have many siblings with disabilities, and I myself do as well. I want to be the teacher these kids deserve, help them believe in themselves, and watch them reach their full potential. I have high expectations for my students, and want to use my personal experience with neurodivergence to help them learn to accommodate and advocate for themselves. I am hoping I can guide them to overcome barriers before they even arrive at them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student with a learning disability. Reading was very hard for them so they often would not try and constantly told people they could not read. After months of very challenging behaviors whenever it was time to or write, we sat down to read. He said, “reading is hard for me, but I can do hard things” and he read the whole passage. He was so proud of himself and I had to hold back tears. He never believed he was capable of reading, and now he loves it so much he wants to be a writer!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would put it towards my students loans and car. My fiancé and I are trying to start a life together. Having those paid off will allow more money available to save each month so we can save for a house someday.
