Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to spark wonder through active, inquiry-based science that builds critical thinking and literacy skills. I wanted to show students the beauty of the natural world, inspire lifelong learning, and help them become thoughtful, productive citizens. Teaching is a dynamic exchange. Students challenge me, colleagues collaborate, and every day offers a chance to make a lasting difference in lives and communities. That deep purpose drives me.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My favorite teaching moment was a magical "Stargazing Party" with Texarkana ISD Gifted & Talented at Martha and Josh Morriss Math & Engineering Elementary. I guided K-5 students to connect everyday cycles like days, months, and years to astronomy's rich history. Then we used telescopes to reveal Jupiter and it’s moons, wide-eyed kids gasped in awe. Sharing constellation stories and seeing their faces light up with wonder reminded me why I teach: to ignite lifelong curiosity under the night sky.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As an astronomy teacher passionate about the cosmos (in the spirit of Bill Nye and The Planetary Society), I would buy a Discovery Dome portable planetarium. Texarkana has no planetarium, and cloudy nights often block stargazing. This inflatable dome would bring immersive universe explorations to my classes, middle school, all Texarkana ISD elementaries, and community events—inspiring awe, curiosity, and appreciation for Earth's rare place in the cosmos.
