Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I was inspired by my elementary music teacher. As a kid who often got in trouble for talking too much in class, my music teacher (Mrs. Spears) always saw past that, and fostered a love of music through singing and performing, which is something I continue to pay forward in my students lives. I am thankful to still have a relationship with her, so that she knows how impactful she continues to be in my life.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

There are honestly too many experiences that have moved me from absolute joy to proud tears. Seeing “the lightbulb“ turn on in their heads, as joy and pride spreads across the faces of my students is what keeps me humble. When my students tell me they feel safe, understood, and inspired, it reminds me of how blessed I am to have chosen teaching as my career. Both music and broadcast journalism have helped my students feel accepted for who they are.

What would you do with the $25,000?

We all know that many teachers do not get into this profession for the paycheck, but with two daughters of my own, who absolutely love the arts, it comes with a financial burden. That’s the sacrifice that my wife and I make for the character building in our daughters. The Lord has provided my family with blessings beyond finances, and if I were to win, it would be an affirmation that God provides to those who are faithful and trust his vision for their life.
