Tell us why you became a teacher

I struggled a lot with reading throughout my own education. Since I had struggled with reading as a young girl, I thought it would give me a good perspective on how to help children who also struggle. I also loved the idea of sharing a space with kids, and making it our home away from home.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I’d say the most memorable experience inside the classroom was watching students get on the edge of their seats (literally) to listen to me finish a chapter of The Giver. They were about to figure out a serious plot twist, and they begged me to keep reading after the bell rang. That has never happened before or since. Outside of the classroom, I went down a water zip line with one of my students.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’m only a teacher because of my students so I’d have to get them donuts or ice cream, right? Some new books for our class library. A nice desk. I’d definitely update my teacher wardrobe a bit. Most of all, I’d put it towards a house for my family. I’d like to grow my family soon.
