Tell us why you became a teacher

After years of being a Hair Stylist, I was ready for a change. I got my degree Communications, but after moving to Nevada, I decided to become a Substitute to see if I would want to teach. I worked in schools all around Las Vegas and saw that there is more than just teaching, you become a confidant, a counselor, a nurse, a role model, and a mentor. For nine months your class becomes a family, a safe place for kids to make mistakes and grow from them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I teach ELA and Social Studies. I incorporate STEM into my lessons at least once a week. I have many memorable teaching experiences, one of the best is when the kids have that "Aha" moment, and the concepts set in. Also the enjoyment the kids get when they are doing STEM projects, they do not realize how much they are learning because of enjoying the activities. To see how excited they are to talk about their accomplishments in finishing their projects and sharing with their classmates.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With the money, I would like to build my library with engaging books. I would also love to buy a STEM bin for extra activities and for my weekly club. With that money, I would buy book sets so I can gift my students books for winter and summer breaks. The extra money would help for my weekly STEM activities that I generally buy from my own money.
