Tell us why you became a teacher

After 20+ years in biochemistry, including work at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, I discovered my true passion through coaching high school basketball. Watching student-athletes grow through hard work and determination inspired me to transition into teaching. I now combine my science background with mentoring to help students reach their full potential.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

After a week home due to weather, students were struggling with chemical and physical properties. I assigned two hands-on activities: a “Snowman in a Bag” and a “Snow Volcano.” The videos poured in of students explaining their results using scientific vocabulary. Engagement increased, understanding deepened, and test scores improved. It was a powerful reminder that creativity can transform learning. Hearing the students excitement in videos and having siblings laughing along was priceless.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I received $25,000, I would first pay off personal debt and put a down payment on a home to create stability for my family. I would then invest in my students by expanding our school chicken coop and garden, purchasing shoes for our cross country team, and helping reduce school lunch debt so more students can focus on learning without financial stress.
