I am a special education teacher. I do it for those “Aha!” moments; to ease the struggle & build confidence in our most vulnerable kids.

After dropping out of college and needing only six credit hours, I started working in a group home for developmentally disabled adults. The longer I worked there the more the urge came over me to work with younger kids so they wouldn’t have to live dependent on other people. I went back to school, finished those 6 credit hours got my teaching license & then completed my masters degree in special education. I taught K-12 with all ability levels and built confidence and independence!
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy very first job teaching. I was on an interview for a self contained class at a middle school. A student with significant communication delays was put in a timeout room where he broke the window with his head and cut himself. The principal asked me if I still wanted a job, to which I responded absolutely. And when I started, I turned that room into a closet and the next year had it removed from my classroom. That student’s behaviors significantly decreased after that room was no longer used.
What would you do with the $25,000?Honestly, I would pay off the credit cards that I used to get teaching supplies and materials. Whatever is left over I would put back into my classroom.
