I love teaching because it is problem-solving with people, making hard ideas click, and doing work that actually matters.

Learn MoreI always knew I wanted a career in science, and I was torn between nursing and teaching. Then I had the chance to study science education at Syracuse University while teaching Bio 101 with a beloved professor whose style really clicked with mine. Later, incredible mentors helped me grow into chemistry, and after 31 years, I’ve never looked back.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable teaching moments are the ones where I fully commit to the fun. I’ve sung silly science songs, dressed as a cnidarian, worn a peanut butter and jelly costume, and turned my classroom into a spooky chemistry lab. I still wear the lab coat Bill Nye signed for me in 1997, and it reminds me that science should feel joyful, memorable, and alive.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would use the money to support my grandchildren’s education or help me live closer to them in retirement. Education has shaped my whole life, and I’d love to invest in theirs too. Being near them would mean more chances to share my love of science as they grow up, which feels like the best kind of full-circle moment.
